Tomás Cotik, born in Argentina, has earned himself an enviable international reputation ever since he took a first prize at the National Broadcast Music Competition in his native land in 1997. Currently professor of violin at Portland State University, he has certainly been no stranger to this column over the past decade.
His latest album for Centaur Records, Telemann’s 12 Fantasias for Solo Violin, TWV 40, may be his finest achievement yet, at least rivalling his 2019 account for that label of Bach’s Complete Sonatas and Partitas.Cotik’s Telemann is impressive on all fronts as a technical achievement that will spur the interest of other performing artists and for a sensual beauty that should appeal strongly to listeners everywhere.
Cotik performs all this music, and more, with such style and flair that he almost makes a daunting task seen easy. A very attractive program that will be of keen insterest to violinists, audiences, and music scholars everywhere.
